Preparing for the Big Day: Cataract Surgery Day

Although we perform thousands of cataract surgery procedures every year at The Wright Eye Center, we always remember that for most of our patients this is their first cataract removal experience – and it can be a bit nerve wracking! When you arrive for your appointment, our team will be ready to welcome you and provide a calming environment in which to relax. In fact, you really don’t have to do anything but relax the day of your cataract procedure.

“Everyone was very nice and made me feel relaxed. Thank you.”

Steps in Cataract Surgery

Through advanced techniques for cataract surgery in Colorado Springs, we now use ultrasound waves to remove your cataract with a procedure known as phacoemulsification. Our cataract specialists perform a no-stitch, no-shot cataract surgery technique. We use topical anesthesia (eye drops) and I.V. sedation, which allows our patients the fastest possible visual recovery.

  1. The first step is to make a small opening in the front of the capsule that supports the natural lens or cataract.
  1. The next step is to insert the phacoemulsification tip. Ultrasound breaks up the cataract and allows it to gently be vacuumed from the eye.
  1. A new replacement lens is then folded and inserted into the eye using the same tiny incision. The incision is self-sealing and usually does not require stitches.
what is cataract surgery

Amazingly, our cataract surgery procedure typically only takes about 15 minutes! (However, please plan on being in our office for 2-3 hours for the entire cataract surgery process.) You’ll return home the same day. Please bring someone to drive you home after your procedure. We will only perform cataract surgery on one eye during your appointment. If you require surgery in both eyes, your second eye surgery will be done in approximately 2 weeks.

It’s not uncommon for cataract patients to experience blurry vision for the first few days after surgery as well as some eye irritation.

Our team has performed thousands of cataract surgeries, helping many patients restore clarity and vibrancy to their vision. Contact us today to schedule a Cataract Evaluation in Colorado Springs to find out if the time might be right for cataract surgery.
