Treatment for Cloudy Vision After Cataract Surgery

Some patients develop cloudy or hazy vision months or years after cataract surgery. This is often caused by posterior capsule opacification, sometimes called a “secondary cataract.”

This does not mean the cataract has grown back. During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed, but a thin clear capsule is left in place to support the lens implant. Over time, that capsule can become cloudy and interfere with vision.

A YAG capsulotomy is a quick in-office laser treatment that creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule, allowing light to pass through more clearly again.

YAG capsulotomy may be recommended for patients who notice:

• Blurry or hazy vision after cataract surgery
• Glare or halos
• Difficulty reading
• Trouble seeing clearly despite a stable lens implant
• Vision that feels like the cataract has “come back”

The procedure is performed in the office and does not involve another cataract surgery.
